Stylistic devices in the novel

1. Irony

She treats me like a visitor,’ thought I. ‘I little expected such a reception; I anticipated only coldness and stiffness: this is not like what I have heard of the treatment of governesses; but I must not exult too soon.’

2. Epithet

"Some people call him a fine-looking young man; but he has such thick lips."

3. Simile

Mary was too slim for her height, but Blanche was moulded like a Dian.

4. Metaphor

Jane says that she wanted to "arrange every chair and table with mathematical precision"

I felt ready to perish with cold.

5. Onomatopoeia

A change had taken place in the weather the preceding evening, and a keen north-east wind, whistling through the crevices of our bedroom windows all night long

6. Hyperbole

How small my portion seemed!

I wished it had been doubled.
